Spiritual Surrender

When on the journey of awakening, spiritual surrender can sometimes be the only viable option available to us...

And it can be a regular practice.

Spiritual surrender is the practice of surrendering to something greater than ourselves.

It may be the only action that makes sense when we hit a doorway or block and life seems to be out of our control.

At the moment of surrender, shift happens. A layer of self falls away and the connection with the One that we all are strengthens.

When you feel like...

  • I can't.

  • This isn't working any more.

  • Or... I don't know how I'll go on.

Let go and hand over to All-That-Is what ever feels too hard... whether it's your whole life, your work, a challenging situation with someone, or even your finances.

If you let go of the belief that you have to do it alone and you allow the One - that is you and All-That-Is - to guide and help you...

Often something bigger and maybe even better than your "small mind" or separate self could ever imagine will either reveal itself to you or just happen... And often sooner rather than later.

Spiritual surrender can also be a practice.

For years I have put the crown of my head on the ground and said, "I surrender."

As I write this, I am aware of the powerful invitation this practice invokes.

When we do this practice, we invite an alignment of our life and actions with the Divine Will... aligning our unconscious, conscious, and Higher Selves with the One.

I remember a few years ago, when I was working with one of my psychospiritual facilitators and...

... I felt overwhelmed by life. I told this wise woman that I just wanted to collapse.

She suggested to follow the wisdom of my body rather than fight it and try to make myself have it all together...

That day - and every time since that I have felt like I couldn't do it anymore - whatever "it" was - I have followed my body's guidance... often collapsing to the floor.

Usually I say something like, "I surrender. I hand this over to you. I can't do it alone." Often - if not always - at this point I am crying. And usually, this is a point when I have truly felt helpless - and acknowledged it to myself.

Every time after surrendering, something has shifted... and my faith in the One that we all are has strengthened.

Spiritual practice helps to prepare us for spiritual surrender.

I meditate regularly, practice waking up my body with mindful movement. I use visualizations and chanting to open my chakras. And I practice conscious breathing. If you want, you can click this link to try a free guided meditation I recorded.

I know now that I am not doing life alone. I know that I - and none of us are - separate from All-That-Is.

But I haven't always known that. And even as I write this I realize how much I'm still in habit to believe I'm doing things alone... even write this.

The more I'm able to remember to let go of what I think I want, to practice Presence and to trust what wants to happen in each moment, to open to the bigger Divine flow of lifeforce, then I experience Essence.
