Goals - Action vs. Outcome Goals
Day Twenty-Eight of How to Attract Clients and Grow a Thriving Private Practice in 40 Days: One woman’s personal journey of applying Manifestation and Marketing principles to re-building her private practice
By Kathryn Yarborough I'm beginning to doubt it I can achieve my goals. Maybe if I break them down into two kinds: action vs. outcome, I'll have hope again because... ...We can’t control the outcome. We can control our actions. Action goals identify specific actions that we want to do and how often we want to do them. For example, if you wanted to lose weight, an action goal might be to exercise 3 – 5 times a week for 60 minutes. Outcome goals identify the results we want and by when – like lose 20 lbs in 3 months. In my case, my outcome goals are: - I see 17 – 25 full fee private clients every week starting sometime between December 1 and March 1.
- I teach 20 professional development workshop days a year with 10 – 15 participants in every workshop or something better by March 31.
- 1-3 new or returning clients contact me every week to make an appointment.
- My income exceeds $10,000 a month by March 31.
I like to make the distinction between outcome and action goals because… We can’t control the outcome. We can control our actions. And a lot of people I know get upset and feel like a “failure” when they don’t achieve their goals. If you make your action goals achievable and you’re as sure as you can be that they will lead to the outcome results you want, then great – you’ll probably get those results. However, if you don’t get the results you want you get to reevaluate your plan. No one is ever a failure! To identify your action goals… Ask yourself – What actions can I take that will likely result in attracting clients? The answer to that question will give you your action goals. Track all your goals and see what happens! What we track grows – so make sure you’ve found a way to map your progress. For years I’ve kept a chart of my monthly income and number of private sessions. It’s a great way for me to see how I’m doing and compare and contrast my results to years past. Here’s my list to the answer the question What actions can you take that will likely result in attracting clients? I can… - Say my intentions every day:
- I intend to attract 1 - 3 new or returning clients this week who make appointments.
- This week I intend to attract 1- 5 new or returning professional development workshop participants who register for one or more workshops.
- This week I intend to attract 1 – 10,000 people who sign up for one or both of my e-lists or become a facebook friend or fan.
- I intend to grow my private practice so that I am seeing 17 – 25 private clients every week by March 1 or sooner.
- I intend to teach 20 professional development workshop days every year with 10 – 25 people in every workshop.
- Create and implement two nurture programs – one for people on a conscious journey of healing, transformation and conscious co-creation and the other for conscious healing arts practitioners and other helping professionals. Send an email out to each group once a month.
- Network 2 - 6 times a month – schedule it and do it.
- Staff a table at 3 – 6 networking events a year to meet new people.
- Do my own breath and movement practice every day.
- Hold a field of expansion and attraction by doing the magnetizing clients exercise 2-3 times a week.
- Imagine an ideal client’s experience from meeting me to working with me and seeing what else I need to put into place.
- Identify and implement other ways to meet new people or get to know more people like…
- Write articles for local magazines
- Do presentations at local groups
- Offer presentations at my center and invite clients and colleagues to bring friends
And I can TRACK my action and outcome goals. This way I know if I’m doing what I said I would do and it's working! This morning when I got concerned about whether or not I would be able to achieve my goals, I also remembered an exercise suggested by Abraham-Hicks. They say to remember that we don’t do it all. We are co-creating with the Universe. They make a suggestion to draw a line down the center of a piece of paper. On one side write down every thing you are willing to do and on the other side write down everything else that needs to get done or that you want the Universe to do. Do your part and let go of everything else. ...I will do my action goals… and I’m going to let the Universe send the people to me who I can help and who want to make an appointment with me or register for a workshop. If you're not sure whether or not you can count on yourself to follow through with your part, I know a great exercise to help you commit to achieving your goals.
