Definition of Wellness

Are you wondering what the definition of wellness is?

Wellness is a way of life that promotes and sustains physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Wellness is a proactive approach to life.

Many people are passive with regard to their health and well-being. When pain, illness, or emotional upset gets bad enough, they go to the doctor, see a therapist, or find some other practitioner who might be able to fix them.

On the other hand, a person practicing wellness does all he or she can to maintain good health like...

  • drink 8 - 16 cups of water a day

  • walk for 20 - 30 minutes a few times a week

  • breathe deeply and fully rather than shallow, chest breathing

The incentives for practicing a wellness way of life include less illness, feeling more relaxed and at ease, and better relationships.

But with the busy lives many of us lead, it can be hard to practice wellness. It takes intention and commitment to self care.

Unfortunately, instead of promoting health and wellness in the workplace, many organizational and corporate structures consciously or unconsciously promote stress and overwork. I think this leads many people to look for jobs in the health and wellness field.

However, without intention and dedication, we practitioners can have a challenging time being proactive in our health and wellness, too. Maybe I'm talking about myself here!
