Dance Therapy
by Kathryn Yarborough, MFA, BC-DMT Dance therapy is a psychotherapeutic modality that uses movement and words to facilitate healing and transformation. It is called dance/movement therapy by the American Dance Therapy Association - the association that approves graduate programs and certifies the dance/movement therapists. Other dance/movement therapists call it movement therapy, body psychotherapy, or expressive therapy. I integrate dance/movement therapy with all that I do. In general, I think of my work as psychospiritual facilitation with a focus on healing, awakening, or co-creation - depending on what the client is working on. However, the dance therapy component in all of my work is very strong because... ... movement and posture informs all that we are and all that we do. When we work with movement we can... - Awaken previously unconscious aspects of ourselves - like joy, confidence, tenderness, or strength.
- Explore, increase our understanding of, and work through unresolved inner conflicts.
- Heal the body-mind split many of us live with.
I've seen my clients heal from depression, develop self-confidence and assertiveness, reduce physical pain, stop smoking or drinking, follow through on exercise programs, and, in general, feel better about themselves and their lives. In my practice I teach my clients skills that support wellness and self-healing like mindfulness, diaphragmatic breathing, and self-expression. I facilitate healing processes using movement and breath that increase self awareness, allow emotions to rise to the surface and be experienced, and resolve inner conflicts. I treat my clients with unconditional positive regard - respecting their journey and assisting in whatever ways I can. People have told me they feel safe with me... that I create a safe environment... and that I do a "really good job" at what I do. Through all that I do, I have come to a place of opening my heart to love and compassion. For me, my private practice is a place for me to express that love and compassion... ... And it allows me to help people awaken to their full potential and True Nature. I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve people in this way.
